Canzone is a handsome, 4-year-old male, fawn color, compact and muscular. His track name was QuickSong, and he came to the GU rescue group when the Corpus Christi track closed in 2007.
Canzone has been waiting for his forever home for 2 years. He is a special case. He is healthy and has no injuries, however, he is a fearful boy, and easily startled. His reaction when he is afraid can be alarming. He cries out and retreats, then curls his lip slightly and makes a soft growling sound if you approach him. When this happens, he wants only for you to leave him alone. After a short while he comes out of it and acts like nothing happened. He has not bitten anyone. The longer he is in his foster home, the longer he goes between these fearful displays (months), and the more quickly he returns to his normal contented state. He goes longer and longer between these episodes, and recovers quickly. He used to hide if someone he didn't know came into the house; now he comes out to visit. Progress.
On the plus side, Canzone is a dog who will never be in your way, he rests quietly nearby. He doesn't get on the furniture. He doesn't chew on anything. He'll do an adorable "happy dance" when you get home, but he won't jump up. He loves to go for walks, and he walks nicely slightly behind you on a loose leash, even when there are distractions. He rides quietly in the car, you don't even know he's there. He's not a fussy eater. He's submissive with other dogs, wouldn't dream of taking their food. He would be a good companion for a sedentary older greyhound, as he is not into 'playing'. We have not cat-tested him, however, he has been fine with small dogs.
Canzone seems to be less afraid when there are other greyhounds around him, the more the better. His forever home needs to have at least one other greyhound. It needs to have no young children, because their sounds and quick movements would startle him, and they might approach him at the wrong time. He needs someone who is calm, patient, gentle, soft-spoken, and understands that he needs time to relax and trust. They also need to be experienced with dogs, not one to be afraid and give up on him. Perhaps someone who has experience with, and a special place in their heart for fearful dogs. He seems to do better with women than men.
