As you know Greyhounds Unlimited has several greyhounds in our care at all times. Most of these dogs are being looked after by our very dedicated group of foster homes. During the summer months the ranks of our foster homes dwindles due to summer vacations and other summer family needs.

This year, instead of sending out a constant plea for foster home help over the next few months (not that we won't accept any help from anyone wishing to help by fostering over the summer), we have made arrangements at a few area kennels to help board some of our greyhounds as we try to get them into foster homes.

Of course this isn't an inexpensive task at all! We estimate our cost for the whole summer (mid-May until after Labor Day) to be approximately $9600 for boarding. This amount also doesn't take into account any of our normal greyhound expenses such as transportation, veterinary care and general sundry items that GU incurs to board or adopt out a greyhound.

Obviously, this is a large amount of money and GU needs your help to cover some of this added expenditure. Our goal is to try and raise about half this amount, which would be $4500. This way we can continue to give our greyhounds the care they deserve. Our fosters are then able to take the family vacation they have planned on taking and not feel guilty about where our greyhounds are going to be kept during their one or two week vacation.

Now before anyone thinks that this is too large of an amount to be spending to board our greyhounds, let us break this amount down a bit and see how inexpensive per person this project will be.

Just our NeedleNose News email, alone, reaches out to over 640 different families. If each family would send GU just the amount of one fast food meal, or the amount of one person going to see a movie, both of which are about $7.50, we would hit our goal of $4500 almost immediately. If every family sent us the money spent out at a nice restaurant for one person, or to go see a sporting event for one person (about $20 or more), we would not only hit our total amount of this project, but also cover some of our veterinary expenses for the summer!

Isn't it just amazing how such a small donation per family would give GU the funds necessary to put our wonderful greyhounds into a facility that gives them the care that they all deserve, without us having to turn down shelters and breeders who are asking us to save some of their greyhounds - simply because the funds are not there to board them while we get them into a foster home over this summer.
