Remembering Mary

Mary Mary McAnally dedicated her life to helping animals in need. We at GU were so very lucky to have Mary's driving passion in helping us help the hounds. There was nothing Mary wouldn't do to come to the aid of a greyhound in need. She literally helped thousands of greyhounds over the years find their forever homes, often taking the sick, the abandoned, the unwanted ones into her home to give them the love and care they desperately needed.

Even after her diagnosis of cancer, she continued to help save the greys. And it's because of the greyhounds that Mary had a reason to live and keep on giving to save their lives. Without a doubt Mary has already found a way to continue her life's mission in helping hounds that have crossed the bridge, caring for them until they are united with their loved ones.

Memorial Messages

Several greyhounds have shared our lives over the years. The one that stands out is our PD. Every time we remember her, we think of Mary's caring and determination to give that "poor dog" another chance at life. Thanks, Mary, for giving countless animals another chance.

I feel so honored to have known Mary McAnally. She helped me with the adoptions of my greys, Chintz and Smoke. She was also there for me when my beloved Smoke crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Please enter your message here: Mary showed me my first Greyhound, Thia, and I will always remember her for that. You have a special place in Heaven Mary.

Mary was truly an angel to the hounds...any animal really. We met Mary when we adopted Ferrari (Forayer) our first greyhound from her. We then adopted Banjo (Degas) and Chili (Rhea) from her. Mary was “all about” caring for animals. We’ll miss you.
- Steve and Carol McPike

Our thanks to Mary for starting us on the greyhound path. It was an honor to know her and her passion.

My heart has been crying since I heard the news yesterday. The greyhound community lost a wonderful supporter, volunteer and friend yesterday, when Mary McAnally passed away at age 82. Mary was the medical coordinator for Greyhounds Unlimited when I started fostering greyhounds. In her, I felt a kindred soul. We sometimes talked for an hour or more about nothing but quarter horse racing in days gone by and dogs. She mentored me through my second foster, who ate an entire ink pen, and my third foster, who nearly died after running into a fence. I will never forget what she said to me that horrible evening, as I cried over the paralyzed dog I wasn't sure would make it through the night. Her first comment was that my tears weren't helping that dog and I needed to shape up. (Mary was tough...she scared the heck out of me until I got to know her better.) The second was: "If she dies," she said, "she will have died doing what she loved." The dog did survive and learned to walk again. And Mary, whom I imagine helped thousands of dogs through the years, left me with the words I needed to understand her own death. She died after spending a lifetime doing what she loved - helping dogs. I wish I had met Mary long before I did, and I wish I'd had the opportunity to spend more time with her in the short time I did know her. I imagine she was greeted at the Rainbow Bridge by many, many wagging tails and happy hounds. RIP Mary, you will be greatly missed.

We were saved and loved by Mary

Although we can’t live forever, there are some people in this world that I wish had that option. Mary was one of them. One cannot describe the kindness, passion and love Mary had for Dogs, all animals for that matter. Mary was the Mother Teresa of animal rescue and adoption. Mary is happily with her beloved dogs across the rainbow bridge now. I hope the Bridge was strong enough to support all the dogs waiting for her on the other side. You will always be in our thoughts Mary.

Mary was such a wonderful person. We adopted Rainey through Mary who was fostering her at the time. Rainey is a reminder to us of Mary’s love and dedication to the greyhounds.
- Mike and Beth Carey

Such an inspirational greyhound lover!
- Peggy Ned

Mary helped me adopt Merlin. Merlin is such a wonderful grey that I fell more and more in love with Greys. Mary talked me into Fostering. She said if you adopt you save one Grey but if you Foster you save many many more. Mary you will be missed.
